Getting a Jamaican passport: what to know before you apply
A passport application looks simple until something small sends it back. Here’s what PICA actually looks at, which route fits you, and where people get caught.
At a glance
- Who it’s for
- Jamaicans getting a first passport, renewing, replacing one, or applying for a child, at home or overseas
- How long
- Usually 7 to 14 working days for a regular adult renewal. Faster options are available for some applications made in Jamaica.
- What it costs
- PICA’s fee starts from J$6,500 for an adult passport. Rush service and replacements cost more, and courier delivery is extra.
Watch: passport renewals, the realities nobody explains
A short video on the passport lanes, the documents PICA asks for, and why they matter.
Which lane are you in?
Every application falls into one of these. Picking the wrong one is one of the most common reasons for delays.
New passport
Your first Jamaican passport. PICA wants solid proof that you are a Jamaican citizen.
Renewal
Your passport is expiring or has expired. Some renewals can be done online; others, such as a name change, must be on paper.
Replacement
Lost, stolen or damaged. This starts with reports you make yourself before PICA will act.
Child’s passport
Under 18. Always on paper, and a parent or guardian attends with the child.
Applying from overseas
You live abroad. Documents, payment and delivery all have to work across borders.
Speed options
Regular
PICA’s standard fee and timeline. Fine if you’re not travelling soon.
Rush
A higher fee for faster processing, for applications made in Jamaica. PICA does not offer faster service to overseas applicants.
PICA’s timelines are estimates and can stretch in busy seasons.
What PICA looks at
These are the things your application is checked against. Get them right and most of the risk is gone.
- Your photosSize, background, and who certifies them.
- Who certifies your formPaper applications need a JP, Notary or consular officer to sign off.
- Proof of who you areBirth certificate, ID, and proof of citizenship where needed.
- Matching namesYour name must line up across every document.
- PaymentThe right fee for your lane and speed.
Where people get stuck
If you apply in person, many small mistakes can be fixed right at the counter. When an application is sent in and something is wrong, there’s no one there to fix it, and it comes back.
- Photos rejectedWrong size, wrong background, or certified the wrong way.
- Names don’t matchA married name, a spelling, or a missing middle name.
- Card declined on the portalPayment fails and the application stalls.
- Wrong lane chosenTrying to renew online when PICA needs paper, or filing a replacement as a renewal.
The complete guide
How to apply, renew and avoid delays, step by step
The overview above gives you the short version. Below is everything in detail, so you can prepare your application with confidence.

Start by finding your application route
A renewal, a first-time application and a replacement each have different requirements. Picking the right one first saves time and money.
First-time Jamaican passport
You will need to prove your Jamaican citizenship and identity, usually with proof of citizenship, acceptable ID, passport photographs and a completed application form.
Renewing a passport
If your passport is expiring or has expired, you may qualify for renewal. Many adults can renew online, but the standard online renewal is not available if:
- you are applying for the first time as an adult
- your last passport was issued when you were a minor
- you have changed your name
- your passport was lost, stolen or damaged
In those cases, you will usually need a paper application.
Lost, stolen or damaged passport
Replacing a passport is not the same as renewing it. You may need to report what happened and provide supporting documents, so check PICA’s instructions for your situation before applying.
Passport for a child
A parent or legal guardian must complete the application and provide consent and supporting documents, such as the child’s birth certificate, photographs, the parent’s or guardian’s ID, and any name-change documents.
PICA states that children aged three and older must attend in person, together with the parent or guardian who completed the form. If a parent is unavailable, lives overseas or cannot give consent, ask PICA for guidance before submitting.
Applying from overseas
Eligible adults abroad can renew online. You will need your previous passport, proof of Jamaican citizenship, a passport photo to upload, an accepted payment card and an email address.
If you don’t qualify for online renewal, contact the nearest Jamaican embassy, consulate or high commission. Allow extra time for international delivery. PICA’s faster services are not offered to overseas applicants in the same way as in Jamaica.
Step by step: preparing your application
Step 1: Confirm you are eligible
Read PICA’s instructions for your route. The simplified adult renewal form has specific conditions about your previous passport, personal details and circumstances. Using the wrong form creates extra work.
Step 2: Gather your documents
Depending on your route, you may need:
- Your current or previous Jamaican passport
- Your birth, adoption or citizenship certificate
- Acceptable government-issued ID
- Two passport photographs that meet current rules
- Proof of a name change, if applicable
PICA may still ask for more documents, even if they weren’t needed last time.
Step 3: Make sure your details match
Compare your full name, date and place of birth, and marital status across your application and documents. A missing middle name or unexplained surname change can cause questions. If your name has changed, have your marriage certificate, deed poll, divorce decree or court order ready.
Step 4: Get the right photographs
PICA’s renewal instructions require photos that are professionally taken, identical, in colour and no more than six months old, with a neutral expression and eyes clearly visible. The background should be off-white, or pale blue if you have grey, white or bleached hair. Head coverings are only allowed for religious reasons.
Step 5: Complete the form carefully
Answer every question accurately. Some paper applications need certification by a Justice of the Peace, notary or consular official, but PICA states that adult renewals without a name change may not need it.
Step 6: Pay and submit
Online applications need an accepted payment card. If someone else submits a simplified adult renewal for you, PICA requires a notarised consent letter and valid ID for that person. Keep your receipt, confirmation email and any tracking number.
How much does a Jamaican passport cost?
PICA lists a fee of J$6,500 for an adult passport renewal. Faster services cost more:
| Faster service | Adult | Minor |
|---|---|---|
| Same day (apply before 10 a.m.) | J$16,500 | J$9,000 |
| Next working day | J$11,500 | J$7,000 |
| Three working days | J$9,500 | J$6,000 |
| Five working days (eligible regional offices) | J$11,500 | J$7,000 |
| Seven working days (eligible regional offices) | J$9,500 | J$6,000 |
Not every option is available for every application or location. You may also pay for photos, certification, courier delivery or consular charges.
How long does processing take?
PICA’s published standard processing times are:
- Kingston headquarters: about 7 working days
- Portmore office: about 11 working days
- Other regional offices: about 14 working days
These are estimates, not guarantees. Weekends and public holidays don’t count, and a missing document can add time. If you have a flight booked, apply early.
How online renewal works
If you qualify (see “Start by finding your application route”), the online process usually goes like this:
- Open PICA’s online renewal service.
- Enter your personal and passport details.
- Upload your photograph and supporting information.
- Pay the fee.
- Follow the email updates for collection or delivery.
Tip: check your spam or junk folder if an expected email doesn’t arrive.

Common mistakes that cause delays
- Wrong application route. Renewal, first-time and replacement are not interchangeable.
- Photos that don’t meet the rules. Wrong background or certification errors mean redoing them.
- Overlooking a name change. You may need a paper application and proof.
- Details that don’t match. Differences in names or dates raise questions.
- Thinking payment means you’re done. Your documents still have to meet the requirements.
- Leaving it too late. Start well before you travel.
Before you submit: quick checklist
- I’ve confirmed my application route
- I have all the required documents
- My personal details match on everything
- My photos meet PICA’s current rules
- I know whether I need certification or consent
- I’ve confirmed the fee and payment method
- I know how I’ll collect or receive my passport
- I’ve saved my receipt and confirmation
Frequently asked questions
Can I renew if my passport has already expired?
Possibly. It depends on your route and how long it has been expired. Check PICA’s current instructions.
Can I renew without visiting a passport office?
Some eligible adult renewals can be done fully online. Others need paper submission or an in-person visit.
Do I need a Justice of the Peace?
Not always. PICA states that adult renewals without a name change may not need certification.
Can someone submit my application for me?
Yes, for simplified adult renewals, with a notarised consent letter and valid ID for the person submitting.
Can I renew online if my name has changed?
No. You’ll generally need a paper application with proof of the name change.
What if PICA asks for more documents?
Follow PICA’s instructions and send what’s requested through the channel they specify. This can add time.
