Coming home? Start your Jamaican citizenship while you’re here
If your mother, father or grandparent is Jamaican, you may already have a right to Jamaican citizenship.
But until you apply, Jamaica treats you as a visitor when you land on your foreign passport. A trip home is the best time to change that.
It isn’t automatic
Many people believe that having a Jamaican parent makes them Jamaican on paper. It doesn’t.
You are entitled to citizenship by descent, but you must apply and prove it.
That was the message from Khalifa Williams-Douglas, Director of Citizenship Services at PICA, speaking on TVJ in August 2026.
Until you apply, you can’t get a Jamaican passport. PICA processed over 7,000 citizenship applications last financial year, so you are far from alone.
Grandparents count too
According to PICA’s Director, there is no generation limit. A grandchild or great-grandchild can qualify.
The condition: every link in the family line has to be documented.
That’s where most people get stuck. Each generation needs its own records, such as birth, marriage or death certificates, often from Jamaica’s Registrar General’s Department (RGD).
One missing or misspelled record can hold up the whole application.
Why start it while you’re home
- Faster service is only offered in JamaicaPICA’s expedited service is for applications made locally (and at the London High Commission). Through other consulates, you get regular service only.
- Your originals stay with youPICA copies and certifies your original documents and hands them straight back. No posting a parent’s birth certificate overseas.
- Questions get answered face to faceIf something needs clearing up, you’re right there.
- Previously held a Jamaican passport?PICA waives the application fee.
What to sort out before you fly
In general, PICA will want to see:
- Your birth certificate
- Your Jamaican parent’s or grandparent’s records
- Proof of any name changes
- Your valid ID
- Two certified photos
The catch: every name and date has to line up, generation by generation.
A record that’s missing, or one that doesn’t match, is what stalls an application.
