The Traps That Grow Your TAJ Bill (and How to Avoid Them)

A self-employed tax bill rarely starts big. It grows quietly, through missed quarters, late returns and estimates you never corrected. This episode walks through the five traps we see most, and what to do if you are already behind.

Key Takeaways

  • Small bills grow: interest builds on each missed quarter, and late returns attract a monthly penalty.
  • Not filing is worse than filing late: TAJ can estimate your income for you, with penalties added.
  • Unfiled years cost your pension: they leave gaps in your NIS record.
  • It can be fixed: file the missing years in order and pay the oldest amounts first.

The 5 Traps

Trap 1: The Nil Return Surprise

A typical case: someone registers a small business, files a nil S04 in their first year and assumes that is the end of it. A year later their account shows J$13,000 for that year, plus interest, plus a second year's J$13,000 estimate. Nothing went wrong. The NIS minimum applied both years, and each missed quarter added interest.

Trap 2: The Late-Filing Penalty

Returns filed after March 15 attract an automatic penalty of J$5,000 for each month or part of a month they are late, on top of interest on any unpaid amount. Filing on time, even if you cannot pay everything yet, stops this one.

Trap 3: The "Best Judgement" Ghost Bill

If you don't file your S04, the Commissioner General can issue an estimated assessment. TAJ estimates your income and sends a bill that can include a penalty of up to 50%, plus interest at 16.62% a year while it stays unpaid. You must pay it unless you file the actual outstanding returns to prove you earned less.

Trap 4: The NIS Pension Wipeout

Every year you skip your S04 can be a year of zero NIS weeks. Ten years of non-filing can cut your pension to a partial rate, or leave you with only a one-time grant.

Trap 5: The TCC Blockade

You cannot get a Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC) with unfiled S04 returns or missed S04a payments. Without an active TCC, you are blocked from bidding on government contracts, renewing certain business licences, or importing goods under commercial duty concessions.

Already Behind? Where to Start

  1. See what TAJ has on record. Log in to the TAJ portal and check your Income Tax and NIS accounts, year by year.
  2. File the missing years, oldest first. Real figures replace estimates and stop the "best judgement" bills.
  3. Pay the overdue amounts first. That stops interest growing, then keep up with each new quarter.
  4. Ask about interest and penalties. The TAJ portal has a waiver application option. Approval isn't guaranteed, but it is worth asking once you are up to date.
