Why a Nil Return Still Costs About J$13,000: The Self-Employed NIS Minimum

Many people file a nil S04, believing that no income means nothing to pay. Then a NIS balance appears on their TAJ account, and it grows. This episode explains the NIS minimum for the self-employed, what you get for it, and how to stop interest building up.

Key Takeaways

  • The minimum: NIS for the self-employed is worked out on at least J$216,666.67 a year, at 6%, so about J$13,000 a year.
  • It applies with no income: a nil S04 still carries the minimum.
  • J$3,250 a quarter: paid on March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15.
  • It works for you: these contributions count toward your NIS record and your pension.

How the Minimum Works

On the S04 and S04a, the income your NIS is calculated on is set to at least J$216,666.67, even if you earned less, or nothing at all. The rate for the self-employed is 6%.

If you earn more than J$216,666.67, NIS is worked out on your actual income instead, up to a yearly ceiling. The portal does the calculation when you file.

What It Buys You

NIS is not just another bill. Your contributions build the record that decides your pension. A lifelong NIS Old Age Pension needs at least 156 paid weeks, and an average of 39 paid or credited weeks for every year of your working life. Fall short, and you may only get a one-time grant. Paying the self-employed minimum keeps those years on your record.

What Happens When You Miss a Quarter

Each quarterly instalment has its own due date. Miss one, and interest starts on that amount: TAJ's rate is 16.62% a year, which works out to roughly 1.4% a month. That is why balances on the portal often end in odd cents. Paying the overdue amounts first, then keeping up with each quarter, stops it growing.

If You Also Have a Job

Your employer deducts NIS from your wages, and that is reported separately. In most cases the self-employed minimum still applies to your business on top of it. Keep your payslips and ask your employer for your yearly P24 certificate. A later episode in this series covers working and running a business in the same year, step by step.
