What a driving abstract shows
An abstract is your official driving history. It lists your licence issue dates and class, traffic violations, demerit points and any suspensions.
It is commonly requested by overseas licensing offices when you exchange your licence, by insurers who give discounts for driving experience, and by employers hiring drivers.
Unpaid tickets and your record
Unpaid tickets and demerit points appear on your abstract. If you need a clean record, settle outstanding tickets before you request it.
Older tickets may need to be cleared at the Traffic Court.
How we process your request
- Pre-audit. We check your letter and licence scans for errors before anything is paid.
- Stamp Office. We take your notarised letter to be stamped, so it is accepted for representation.
- Payment and lodging. We pay the abstract fee at TAJ and lodge your request.
- Collection. When the Island Traffic Authority has prepared your abstract, we collect it in person and email you a scan.
- DHL dispatch. We send the original to you by tracked international courier.
Why does my letter need to be notarised and stamped?
Your driving record is confidential. For a client overseas, a third party can only request and collect it with an authorisation letter that has been notarised where you live and stamped at the Stamp Office in Jamaica. A plain letter is turned away at the counter. You see the notary; we handle the stamp.
Will the government send it to me overseas?
No. Government offices in Jamaica do not courier abstracts overseas. The abstract is collected over the counter, so someone in Jamaica has to pick it up and send it to you.
Can you just email it to me?
We email you a scan as soon as we collect it. Foreign licensing offices and insurers usually want the physical original, which we send by DHL.
I only had a learner's permit. Can I get an abstract?
No. A driving abstract is only issued to people who hold, or have held, a full Jamaican driver's licence.
